Kerf Tool FAQ

Can I make the Kerf Tool out of any material?

Yes ! But we recommend using 1/4" material, and more importantly - material that you know you have your cut settings "dialed in" for. Aggressive cut settings will result in excess kerf - and an inaccurate tool being made on your machine, greatly affecting it's precision.

Why are there multiple versions?

People like choices! If you are only printing one, print the one with the center slot - it flexes the least and will offer great results. The open side slots are easier to insert, but you must insert all of the way for accurate readings. They are also good for materials that don't have corners to insert - like a scrap circle from a previous project that you want to put to good use!

Why doesn't some 1/4" wood fit in your 1/4" size guide?

Big Box Stores sell 1/4" wood that is ACTUALLY 3/16" or even some that run thicker than they should. We have made an additional kerf tool guides covering more size ranges, and it is included in the file E and F If you were an early adopter that did not include the extended size ranges, please reach out via Etsy. We will send it to you complimentary once we verify your past order - as we will with all revisions of this tool.

What material thickness size range does the kerf tool cover?

This System includes 195 total sizes for Imperial and 195 total sizes for Metric.

(Both Measuring Systems Included)

  • 18 sizes for 3/32 materials - NEW size ranges added with version "F" on 4/2022
  • 36 sizes for 1/8" materials - for most 1/8" materials.
  • 24 sizes for 5/32" materials, mainly for Columbia Products branded "PureBond" from HD or Lowes
  • 36 sizes for 1/4" materials - for most 1/4" materials.
  • 36 sizes for 3/16" materials. Marketed as 1/4" by Columbia Products "PureBond" from HD or Lowes
  • 45 sizes for 1/4"+ materials - NEW size ranges added with version "F" on 4/2022, for materials that run thick or true to 0.25"
  • 18 sizes for ~2mm materials - NEW size ranges added with version "F" on 4/2022
  • 36 sizes for 3mm materials
  • 24 sizes for 4mm materials
  • 72 sizes for 5-6mm materials
  • 45 sizes for 6mm materials - NEW size ranges added with version "F" on 4/2022

Do I have to print these more than once?

Only if you damage them or something significant affects your machine - like a ton of use or having to replace a component like a lens or tube. Make them on durable material and they could last years !

I have more than one laser machine - do I need one for each?

Yes. These tools are mated to the exact machine they were cut on. They cannot be shared, even among laser cutters that you may use side-by-side. Cut one for each machine that you use - you only buy the file once !

What acrylic does LaserLightDesigns prefer?

We prefer Acrylic from Cerulean Tides. Their website is accurate, and they ship quickly. www.ceruleantides.com
